Stay Healthy During the Holidays

Downtown Sarasota Yoga

The holiday season has begun with Thanksgiving past and holiday parties and get togethers amping up. Here are a few tips and reminders to help you stay healthy during the holidays.

Eat before you go to a party. Choose, high-fiber nutrient-dense foods that will keep you satiated throughout the evening.

If you do enjoy alcoholic beverages, drink a glass of water before and in between drinks. Choose soda water/club sodas as mixers. Order drinks “tall” meaning a higher ratio of mix to alcohol. Avoid sugary or creamy cocktails.

Try not to position yourself near the food display at holiday gatherings and if you do snack while there load up on the vegetable tray.

For holiday meals, trade creamy casserole side dishes for roasted vegetables. Chop root vegetables such as sweet potatoes, parsnips, carrots, and beets, add in some Brussel sprouts toss everything in a little olive, grapeseed, or coconut oil, season with salt and pepper and roast at high heat until everything is browned and slightly soft.

Don’t deprive yourself. Oftentimes, this can lead to overindulge. If you’re wanting it, have just a little bit of a treat to satisfy the craving. If you do overindulge the best thing to do is get right back on track with the next meal and exercise regime.

Keep moving – walk especially after a big meal. Practice Bikram Yoga throughout the holiday season, the studio is opened 365 days per year with a special holiday schedule. Check the Facebook page or website for class times.

Make an effort to hit the market. There’s a fantastic Farmers Market in downtown Sarasota a stone’s throw from the Bikram Yoga studio. Stock up on the abundance of fresh, local, and organic produce, pasture-raised eggs, and other healthy finds.

Before putting everything away wash and prep fresh fruits and vegetables so they are ready to go without any effort. By keeping your own kitchen stocked with good-for-you foods, temptation to grab unhealthy items overflowing grocery items this holiday season will be curbed.

Follow the 80/20 rule - practice healthy behaviors 80 percent of the time and allow yourself 20 percent to enjoy a treat or beverage.

Wishing you happy and healthy holidays from the Sarasota Bikram Yoga Studio!
